In a break from 2025 tradition, Adrien Brody did not pick up the award for Best Actor at the SAG Awards. Instead, the gong went to Timothée Chalamet for his performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. 'Thank you. I was not expecting this at all, truly,' he said in his speech. 'I’ll start by thanking my mother, who I’m here with tonight. She’s been working at Actors’ Equity for 40 years.'
He then joked that 'the classiest thing would be to downplay the effort that went into this role and how much this means to me', but 'the truth is, this was five and a half years of my life. I poured everything I had into portraying this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan, a true American hero, and it was the honour of a lifetime playing him'.
Timothée concluded his speech by saying, 'I can’t downplay the significance of this award because it means the most to me. I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness.'
The actor acknowledged that 'people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats; I’m inspired by the greats here tonight. I’m as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis as I am by Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there'.
Why wasn't Kylie Jenner at the SAG Awards?
As he mentioned in his SAG Award speech, Timothée's mother Nicole Flender was his trusty plus one at the event. So far this awards season – at the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, the Santa Barbara Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival – Timothée's date has been his girlfriend of more than two years, Kylie Jenner. However, it is thought that Kylie was unable to attend the ceremony following the sudden death of her long-term hairstylist, Jesus Guerrero.
Jesus was 34 when he died and his sister posted a statement on a GoFundMe page saying, 'Unfortunately, his passing came very suddenly and unexpectedly. Currently, his family is taking care of his personal belongings and accommodations to bring him home to Houston.'
He had worked closely with Kylie for many years, even doing her hair for the Golden Globes in January. Jesus also accompanied The Kardashians star, who he called his 'main girly', on a trip to Paris last month. While Kylie has not responded to the news publicly, fans have assumed her grief is the reason she did not accompany her boyfriend at the awards show.
It is currently unclear whether she will be by his side at the Oscars on 3 March, where Timothée is nominated for Best Actor. He is up against Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice, Colman Domingo for Sing Sing and the current favourite, Adrien Brody for The Brutalist.
