Liam Hemsworth posted a thirst trap this weekend, much to his fans' – and friends'– approval. Except, when fellow actor and friend Adam Devine commented ‘Thirst TRAP’ on the picture, Hemsworth revealed that he didn’t actually know what one was, responding: ‘I just googled thirst trap. 100% true ;)’
We’re not sure what we’re more stressed about: Hemsworth not knowing what a thirst trap is or the fact he unironically uses winky faces. But seriously, Hemsworth’s admission revealed an unbelievable truth: many people don’t actually know what a thirst trap is.
So, allow us to give you a detailed explaination. At its core, a thirst trap is anything you post on social media that will elicit a response or attention from followers – most commonly, people you fancy.
Urban Dictionary defines it as ‘a sexy photograph or flirty message posted on social media for the intent of causing others to publicly profess their attraction.’
You post a picture you know will get those thirsty (aka eager) people in your DMs sending you flame emojis. Or, in Hemsworth’s case, women sending heart eye emojis. Think bikini pictures, men with dogs (a la Hemsworth), men with babies or shirtless selfies. Any of those will undoubtedly elicit a thirsty response, whether you actually want it or not.
But, contrary to popular belief, thirst traps aren’t just the above. Those are the core thirst traps, the basic bitch thirst traps, but in reality, thirst traps exist on a spectrum.
Allow me to elaborate with examples. There’s the dinner post that features two glasses of wine but definitely not the person you’re ‘having dinner’ with (because it's probably your mum). There’s the meme post you share on Stories that only the person you like will find funny. There’s the caption you add to a picture that you absolutely know will set up an easy joke for someone to respond to (I.e. a friend of mine writing ‘my favourite type of balls’ next to a picture of stuffing balls - I know, I should’ve blocked her there and then.)
And my personal favourite for how absolutely blatant it is: the ‘love fresh bedsheets’ post that also happens to feature romantic lighting and a bottle of wine in the corner.
Thirst traps are an integral part of social media but it’s up to you how obvious you want to be with your thirst traps. Because, actually, sometimes the best thirst trap of all is posting nothing. Nothing elicits attention more than everyone wondering why you stopped posting your every move. Just a thought, guys.
