Imagine if one of your closest friends and champions asked you to lose weight for the sake of work.
That's the awkward situation Hollywood power duo Kirsten Dunst and Sofia Coppola found themselves in, while filming Coppola's new Civil War drama The Beguiled.
Coppola suggested Dunst lose a few pounds in order to accurately portray her role as the film's main character.
But, in her own words, Dunst "pushed back". And being the cool ladies that they are, they worked it out between them.
“It’s so much harder when you’re 35 and hate working out,” Dunst tells Variety, in a joint cover shoot with Coppola for the magazine.
She added that the film's location in rural Louisiana made the request more problematic: “I’m eating fried chicken and McDonald’s before work. So I’m like, ‘We have no options! I’m sorry I can’t lose weight for this role.’”
Dunst said Coppola was very understanding.
The pair first worked together when Dunst was just 16 and Coppola was 27, on Coppola's directional debut The Virgin Suicides.
They joined forces again on Marie Antoinette, which Coppola wrote with Dunst in mind for the lead.
Despite the question over weight, the pair have always been staunchly supportive of one another, presenting a united front in the male-dominated world of Hollywood.
“She was always a good influence on me as a young woman,” Dunst says, recalling a compliment that Coppola once paid her that stayed with her for a long time.
“She said to me, ‘I love your teeth; don’t ever fix your teeth.’ I remember doing a Spider-Man movie later, and one of the producers was like, ‘I need to take you to the dentist!’
“They even fixed my teeth on the poster. But I just knew I was never doing that. Sofia is the chicest, coolest girl, and she thinks my teeth are great.”
“She gave me confidence in little things that I wouldn’t necessarily have had,” she adds.
