One thing we're looking forward to over the festive season is the latest offering from TV juggernaut Shonda Rhimes: Bridgerton, a period drama narrated by Julie Andrews which will star one of our favourite actresses: Derry Girls' Nicola Coughlan. The series lands on Netflix this Christmas Day, and we can't wait to sit down and watch it while we gorge on Celebrations.
It is helmed by Shonda Rhimes, the indisputed queen of US TV. Her name should ring a bell. In 2007, the prolific writer was named one of TIME magazine's 100 People Who Help Shape the World - and, unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably seen at least one of her series. As ShondaLand, her production company, embarks on producing eight series for Netflix, here's what she's previously worked on. Spoiler: there are a lot of good TV shows, and a few early surprises.
What Else Has Shonda Rhimes Worked On?
Crossroads
Yes, Shonda wrote Crossroads, the 2002 comedy starring Britney Spears about three teenage girls on a road trip across America! After Britney came up with the idea, Rhimes wrote the script. Despite being one of the world's biggest pop stars at the time, apparently Britney only requested tuna Lunchables and edamame on set.
Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement
You might be shocked to learn that Shonda first worked with Julie Andrews on Princess Diaries 2. While the film didn't get the best reviews from critics - we still love it - Shonda later said she treasured the experience as she was able to work with Queen Clarisse (aka Julie). The Sound Of Music legend must have loved working with Shonda, as Julie is narrating Bridgerton as gossip writer Lady Whistledown.
Grey's Anatomy
Of course, what Shonda is most famous as the showrunner for medical drama Grey's Anatomy, which is still impressively going, 366 episodes later, after its inception in 2005. But is it any wonder it's been on TV for so long when the series has received 38 Emmy nominations?
Private Practice
A spin-off of Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice follows the life the life of Dr. Addison Montgomery - aka Kate Walsh -as she leaves Seattle Grace Hospital in order to join a private practice, located in Los Angeles. The show ran from September 2007, to January 2013 - but you can stream it on Prime Video.
Station 19
The second Grey's Anatomy spin-off! But instead of doctors, this series focuses on firefighters after Ben Warren leaves the emergency wing of Seattle's most famous hospital to go fight fire instead.
Scandal
The acclaimed political thriller starring Kerry Washington ran for 124 episodes over seven seasons. Scandal focuses on Kerry's character Olivia Pope and her crisis management firm, as well as staff at the White House and surrounding political scene. Thanks to Scandal, Kerry won the Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series and has been nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, a Golden Globe Award and a SAG Award.
Still Star Crossed
Bridgerton won't be the first period drama ShondaLand has worked on - Still Star Crossed ran for one season in 2017. The show, complete with exquisite costumes, was based on the Melinda Taub novel about the remaining members of the Capulet and Montague families, following the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
How To Get Away With Murder
In this much loved series, Viola Davis stars as Annalise Keating, a law professor at a prestigious Philadelphia university who, with five of her students, becomes entangled in a murder plot. The show ran for six seasons - and meant Viola was the first Black woman to win an Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama.
The Catch
This comedy-drama might have received low ratings - leading it to be cancelled after two seasons - but it had generally positive reviews from critics. The Catch follows Alice Vaughan (Mirelle Enos), who runs a private investigation firm in LA, who is determined to find her fiancé who has defrauded her.
Off The Map
Another medical series... This time based in the South American jungle. However, it only survived for one season in 2011 before ABC decided to axe it.
For The People
This legal drama is set in the Southern District of New York (SDNY) Federal Court, known as 'The Mother Court'. Ben Shenkman and Hope Davis lead a cast of new lawyers—both prosecutors and federal public defenders—as they handle the most high-profile and high-stakes cases. Oh, and their personal lives get very messy. For The People aired from 2018-2019.
