Love Island star Shaughna Phillips has hit back at criticism this week after a cluster of her Instagram followers took her to task for a seemingly different appearance. Accusing her of using fillers, they were quickly taken down for their assumption. 'Please please PLEASEEEEEEE tell me when you think I’ve had time to get fillers during a WORLDWIDE PANDEMIC...' she responded. It's no surprise that she was annoyed: she has never been anything but honest when it comes to discussing her use of such treatments.
Shaughna fast became one of our favourite contestants of this year’s Winter series of the show. Her one liners (‘Congrats Hun{
Shaughna tells Grazia that she last had fillers and Botox before she left for South Africa in January, and she’s starting to plan what she'll get done once practitioners reopen when lockdown has eased. ‘I’ve been having my lips done for a good few years now, so it will take more than a few months of lockdown to get those to deflate. The longer I leave [filler] the better it looks, but now there is a bit of an itch and I can’t wait to get back out and do it, treat myself and make myself feel a bit better. I won’t do anything excessive, I won’t do anything that I wouldn’t normally have done.’
People say it’s anti-feminist because you’re doing it to look a certain way to other people. But I’m doing that for myself.
Shaughna says that she had Botox before Love Island in order for her make up ‘sit better’ on her face rather than for any wrinkles (‘I don’t exactly have a forehead like a Shar Pei’). ‘Other than that I get my lips done regularly. I got this other treatment called Profilo, which is injections under your skin. It basically makes you look glowy and like you’ve had a really good night’s sleep. It was amazing. I had it done once before I flew to South Africa. So I think that and my lips are the things I’ll have done straight away. Botox, I got done because I was going to be on telly. It wasn’t something I felt I really needed so I’m not in a rush to do it again.’
The 25-year-old former democratic services officer from South London says that she understands the rise of what has been dubbed the ‘Love Island Face’, with statistics showing a sharp rise in cosmetic treatments such as lip fillers and Botox when the show is on air. Her warning is for women considering it is to do their research.
‘At the end of the day it’s your face, not Molly-Mae’s face that might go tits up. What might look good for her might not look good for you,' she says.
She adds, ‘I don’t like it when people say girls are insecure if they’ve had it done, it’s a personal thing - if it makes you feel better what’s wrong with that? Any fillers I get done are so I can wear less make-up. You can just get up and your face looks pretty.’
‘People say you’re doing it to look a certain way to other people. But I have not got £200 every couple of months to please other people. I’m doing that for myself. Of course we care, and everyone wants to be liked. But if I get comments on my Instagram telling me that my lips are too big I just think tell someone who cares, I get lip filler to make my lips massive.’
