Selling Sunset star Maya Vander has had a stillbirth. The 39-year-old real estate agent shared the tragic news via her Instagram on Friday, saying she had 'the hardest day of her life' the day before when she tragically lost her third child with her husband. The baby was named Mason.
In her social media post announcing the loss, Maya posted an image of a memory box given to her in hospital alongside the heartbreaking caption.
The caption read: 'Yesterday was the hardest day of my life. I had a stillbirth at 28 weeks. I always heard of it but never imagined I’d be part of the statistics. Instead of delivering a baby, I get to go home with a memory box… I do not wish this on anyone. What was a regular weekly checkup turned into a nightmare that I never imagined would happen to me. You’ll always be in our heart baby Mason.’
Stillbirth is when a baby is lost after 24 weeks of pregnancy (if earlier, it's known as a miscarriage) and happens in around 1 in every 200 births in England, according to the NHS. It does not always have an obvious cause but may occur due to complications with the placenta or a birth defect.
The reality television star also shared her reasons for telling her followers in this way. She wrote: ‘Given I share my pregnancies in the show, I knew I’ll have to post about this and avoid the “when is your due date” question.’
Maya has spoken in the past about her fertility struggles, revealing she had two miscarriages before welcoming her son Aiden in April 2019 and daughter Elle Madison in May last year, and announcing her third pregnancy in July this year.
Selling Sunset co-stars Heather Rae Young and Tarek El Moussa were among the many celebrities sharing messages of support and condolences in the comments. As Chrishell Stause wrote: 'This is the unimaginable. It’s hard to find words. My heart aches for you and your family. You are surrounded by so much love.'
