The world discovered that Rihanna was expecting her first baby last January when she stepped out in New York and unveiled her growing bump alongside boyfriend A$AP Rocky.
Opting for a grander scale approach for her second pregnancy reveal, the Umbrella singer confirmed she will soon be a mum of two, during her Super Bowl halftime spectacle on Sunday (12 February).
What a way to mark her return to the stage after a seven-year stage hiatus.
The pop and R&B phenomenon – who turns 35 next week - used the coveted entertainment slot to perform a medley of her most-loved hits, including Diamonds and We Found Love, but not before showing off her bump in an attention-grabbing red ensemble.
Ahead of the show, Rihanna recalled the inner conflict she had about performing: ‘Are you sure? I’m three months postpartum, should I be making major decisions like this right now? I might regret this.’
She added, ‘But when you become a mum, there’s something that just happens where you feel like you could take on the world, you could do anything… As scary as that was, because I haven’t been on stage in seven years, there’s something exhilarating about the challenge of it all.
‘And it’s important for me to do this, this year. It’s important for representation, it’s important for my son to see that.’
After her performance, a representative for Rihanna confirmed her pregnancy to The Hollywood Reporter.
As all corners of the showbiz world continue to talk about RiRi’s news, we have compiled all the information we know so far, including about baby number one.
When did Rihanna have her first baby?
The Barbadian welcomed a son with Praise the Lord rapper A$AP Rocky (Rakim Athelaston Mayers) in May 2022, a year after their relationship was confirmed.
It came four months after the singer announced the news with pre-authorised paparazzi shots from her favourite entertainment photographer Miles Diggs (aka Diggzy).
Rihanna has not revealed the name of her firstborn, previously explaining to Associated Press, ‘We just didn’t get around to it yet, really. We’ve just been living. But I guess there’s a certain freedom that comes with kind of just like getting it out there.’
In December, Rihanna made an endearing TikTok debut as she shared a glimpse of her son for the first time in a video captioned 'hacked'.
The adorable snippet has racked up 6.7m likes to date and boasts over 82k comments, one of which read, 'That little man doesn’t even realize his mama is RIHANNA. 😂♥️'.
When is Rihanna's second baby due?
While this has not been confirmed, a source told People that Rihanna could be a second-time mum by the summer.
The insider said, ‘Rihanna has so many things she is grateful for. She is ecstatic about how her show went. She felt great about performing again. She was also super excited to confirm her pregnancy.’
They added that she wants ‘several kids’ and can’t wait for her son to have a sibling later this year.
‘She loves parenting with Rakim. They are great together,’ the source said.
What has Rihanna said about motherhood?
She has confirmed that she’d like at least three or four children. Speaking to Vogue in 2020, she said: ‘The only thing that matters is happiness, that’s the only healthy relationship between a parent and a child. That’s the only thing that can raise a child truly, is love.’
The songstress recently admitted at a press conference that work-life balance has been ‘impossible’ to achieve since becoming a mum.
‘No matter how you look at it, work is always something that’s going to rob you of time with your child,’ she said. ‘That’s the currency now, and that’s where it goes, the magnitude of how much it weighs. When you make decisions on what you’re going to say yes to, it has to be worth it.’
In November, she gave a rare insight into her bundle of joy, telling People, ‘He is funny, he’s happy – and he’s fat! He’s amazing. It’s a real cuddly stage right now.’
The same month, she drew on the comparisons between her and her mother, Monica Braithwaite.
‘Even the little things that annoy me about her, I do it. I literally make all of the same faces. I say the same things. I clear my throat the same way. I move my mouth the same way. I either never noticed it or it never happened until I had a baby,’ she revealed to E! News.
