Let's face it: in the grand scheme of things, 2020 is not going down well as the greatest of years. It has not been fun. But Reese Witherspoon - actor, producer and general inspiration - has come up with an amazing idea. Let's just skip to the end.

Last night saw the Emmy Awards go relatively virtual, with the coronavirus pandemic demanding that most of Hollywood stayed at home to wait and see if they had won in their respective categories. The show was actually pretty fun, thanks to some great speeches, worthy wins and actual, real-life appearances from a few A-Listers. But Reese dialled in from her home and gave us one of the most fun drop-ins of the evening.

A live video feed showed that Reese was in her garden hosting an Emmy party with Kerry Washington - her Little Fires Everywhere co-star - as well as various co-workers on that show, as well as other projects The Morning Show and Big Little Lies (an aside: how impressive has Reese's shift into television been?!). A quick glance showed that her party had a New Year's theme, with 2021 motifs littering the garden along with champagne flutes, hats and streamers.

When asked by Jimmy Kimmel why she'd taken such an approach, Reese responded: 'Well, cause we're ready for this year to be over.'

'You can do that?' asked Jimmy. 'You could just end the year?'

'Well, yeah, I mean, we're Emmy-nominated television producers,' Reese joked. Kerry chimed in with a 10 second countdown to 2021.

Reese did, however, accept that there was a silver lining to an Emmy ceremony that didn't require her actual, literal presence. 'Shortest #Emmys commute yet!' she wrote on Instagram. 'Bringing the festivities to my lawn and excited to celebrate the incredible cast and crews of @themorningshow, @biglittlelies and @littlefireshulu tonight! ✨ @hellosunshine @televisionacad.'

She also wore slippers. I mean, you would, wouldn't you?
