Rebekah Vardy has given her first TV interview since the WAGatha Christie scandal of 2019, when Colleen Rooney revealed Vardy had been leaking fake stories about her to the press. Appearing on Loose Women, Vardy said the trolling she experienced in the days after Rooney’s infamous Instagram post put her in hospital with stress three times.
‘It was really, really hard,’ she told the panel show. ‘It is probably up there with one of the worst things that I have had to deal with apart from being abused when I was younger.’
Explaining that she was in a taxi about to meet some friends for dinner when she was sent the post by her manager, she said: ‘It was hideous and it was horrible and I don’t think I was prepared for what was to come.’
‘The trolling was the worst part for me,’ she explained. ‘I have been trolled before and I do get it all the time, but it escalated off the back of this. I ended up with severe anxiety attacks. I ended up in hospital three times. I ended up with kidney stones.
‘I felt like I couldn’t go out with people just looking at me just questioning... did she do it? Did she not do it?’ she continued.
Vardy was seven months pregnant at the time of the dramatic feud and said her husband Jamie ‘really struggled’ seeing her upset. ‘It was a hard time,’ she stated. However, the incident has given her a sense of urgency in dealing with trolling online given how much damage it caused her.
‘If you don’t try and highlight it, which I did… I went to the police and several arrests were made, you let them win and you can’t let them win,’ she said. ‘I think the more we highlight the fact that this is happening and this is really serious, the more the chances are of doing something good about it.’
'I think people don’t realise when they are saying stuff like that,’ she added. ‘No one would ever say anything to your face; they never do, do they. They aren’t brave enough to say things to your face.’
Now, she’s choosing to focus on her new baby Olivia – who at six months old joined her on the panel show – and staying healthy for her child. ‘It’s a new year, it’s 2020, time to focus on exciting things that are happening, new baby and babies need healthy mums.'
Loose Women is on weekdays from 12:30pm on ITV
