Fancy feeling really, really old? It’s been fifteen years since The Princess Diaries was released in cinemas. Yep, that’s fifteen years you’ve spent wondering if it’s actually possible to apply for Genovian citizenship and claim Julie Andrews as your grandmother. In the timeless words of our heroine Mia Thermopolis, ‘Shut up!’
To mark the anniversary of her first ever movie role, Anne Hathaway took to Instagram to celebrate in the best possible way: with a gif of a pre-makeover Mia learning to dance with royal bodyguard Joe (played by Hector Elizondo).
‘It’s been 15 years (say it with me) SHUT UP!!!!! To all the fans who have loved Mia, Louie, Lily, Joe, Michael and, of course, Queen Clarisse thank you from the bottom of my heart!’ she wrote, before adding a heartfelt tribute to the film’s director, Garry Marshall, who died in July at the age of 81.
‘And to Garry Marshall, thank you for making me a princess. I love you always my beloved friend and teacher, and I miss you every day xx’
In response to Marshall’s death, Anne was one of a clutch of celebrities who paid tribute to the much-loved director. The actress posted a black and white throwback shot of herself with Marshall and Julie Andrews, taken during the filming of The Princess Diaries.
‘Garry was goodness itself,’ she wrote. ‘I met him when I was a child who thought she was a grown-up; he treated me with grace and patience and respect and always, always love. I’m so happy I made three films with him.’
