Shut! Up! Every millenial’s favourite fictional royal-in-waiting, Mia Thermopolis, could be returning to the big screen after an all-too-extensive hiatus.
Rumours of a sequel to 2004’s Royal Engagement have been circulating since last year, when director Garry Marshall revealed that he had spoken to Anne Hathaway (or Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia, as she’s known in some circles) to moot the idea of returning to everyone’s favourite tiny European principality.
‘I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3,’ he said. ‘We have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it,’ he said in March last year, later revealing to E! News that he was ‘talking’ to Disney about the project.
When Marshall sadly passed away last summer, though, we lost all hope in the possibility of a reunion – but the Queen of Genovia has spoken, and it seems that the cast are still keen to make the film as a tribute to his memory.
Speaking to Buzzfeed News, Dame Julie Andrews confirmed that ‘there’s talk about [a reunion] and [Anne Hathaway] is very keen to do it. I would willingly and happily do it.’

‘I think we might do it in honour of him,’ she added. ‘Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to…’

Cast members Robert Schwartzman, Chris Pine and Hector Elizondo (who played Mia’s bodyguard Joe) have both expressed interest in returning to Genovia, with Elizondo revealing that he’d like to see a female director take the helm.
