Prince Harry has long been known as the royal family’s resident joker, and it seems that the fifth in line to the throne has further played up to his mischievous reputation by making a quip about girlfriend (and rumoured fiancée) Meghan Markle.
While taking part in Westminster Abbey’s Field of Remembrance ceremony yesterday, the Prince was asked about the whereabouts of Suits star Meghan by Matt Weston, a bomb disposal expert who previously served in Afghanistan. What followed was a moment of levity in an otherwise solemn and reflective occasion.
‘I took the mickey and asked where his missus was and he said she wasn’t here,’ Weston told journalists at the event. ‘I asked if she would come next time because she’s awesome, and he said he couldn’t hide her anywhere – but I said you wouldn’t have to hide her.’
‘I would love to meet her – I think she’s very cool,’ he added. ‘He’s a very lucky man and she’s brilliant.’
Though Harry and Meghan made their official debut as a couple at an Invictus Games fixture in Toronto earlier this year, it seems that the Prince is still keen to keep his relationship under the radar.
At the ceremony, Harry also made time to talk to seven-year-old Harrison Degiorgio-Lewis, a youngster wearing a beret and medals that had belonged to his late uncle, who died in Afghanistan in 2008.
‘He has been coming here for four years now to represent his uncle,’ explained the boy’s grandmother, Helen Lewis. ‘Harry recognised him – they have a bond, as they share a birthday. Harry asked him about his uncle Aaron, and he said how proud he was.’
Earlier this week, it was reported that contrary to rumours of an impending engagement announcement, Harry and Meghan might keep us waiting for an official reveal from Kensington Palace.
‘There won’t be any announcements until at least after Kate has had her baby,’ a source told the Daily Beast. According to the publication, ‘Harry cares deeply about not upsetting is grandmother, and would be wary of appearing to seek to upstage the carefully planned royal Christmas schedule with an announcement any time after late November.
