If you’re at all invested in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s ongoing real-life rom-com (guilty!), it probably hasn’t escaped your notice that there are a lot of conflicting reports floating around right now about the couple’s honeymoon.
Earlier this year, it seemed to be a given that the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex would head to Africa following their wedding; first, Botswana was slated as a potential location, one with special significance for the couple (who travelled there in the formative stages of their relationship), before new reports suggested that Harry and Meghan were actually planning a stay at the Hoanib Valley Camp in Namibia, an eco-friendly resort that had not yet been opened up to the public.
Since then, however, things have got a little less clear cut. Last month saw reports that Harry and Meghan would in fact be honeymooning in Alberta, Canada, and would be staying in the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, which is historically a favourite hideaway for the royal family: King George VI and his wife, the Queen Mother, visited in 1939, while Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip stayed there in 2005. The Fairmont, however, then interjected with a denial that the couple had ever booked in. Now, Harry and Meghan are rumoured to have stayed in Ashford Castle, a luxurious country estate in Country Mayo, Ireland, which was formerly owned by the Guinness family. So, it seems that there was some truth in old reports of the couple planning an Irish mini-moon after all (though Kensington Palace have so far remained silent on the subject).
Of course, there is a reason for all this back and forth. Speaking to Elle, royal commentator Omid Scobie revealed that planning a royal honeymoon can be a tense business: the moment we think we know where the couple are heading, the chances are that they’re about to choose somewhere entirely different. ‘If a location leaks prior to travel, it compromises safety on the trip, and they’ll be advised by their protection team to chance plans,’ he explained. ‘Kate and William’s protection officers ended up doing recon on two destinations before they settled on the Seychelles for their 2011 honeymoon.’
If you’re struggling to keep up with Harry and Meghan’s hypothetical world travels, you’re not alone. We do, however, know one thing for sure: the couple are now back in London. Harry was photographed attending a charity gala for Onside Youth Zones last night, which took place in the grounds of Kensington Palace, and we can be certain that the Duke and Duchess will appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace tomorrow following the Trooping the Colour parade, along with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and co.
