Prince Harry will take part in his first official role during a state visit later this month.

The fifth in line to the throne has been asked by Queen Elizabeth to accompany King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain to Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 13th July, the second day of their royal visit to the UK. Here, they will lay a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior, before being taken on a short tour of the Abbey by the Dean.

Kensington Palace has confirmed that this is the first time that Harry has been issued with a formal role during a state visit, while Buckingham Palace has issued official notes for the occasion, stating that ‘the King and Queen of Spain will visit Westminster Abbey, accompanied by HRH Prince Henry of Wales.’

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who are set to embark on a week-long tour of Germany and Poland later in the month with their children George and Charlotte, will not play an official role in the proceedings, though it is thought that they will attend a formal State Banquet on Wednesday evening.

It is the first time that King Felipe and Queen Letizia have embarked upon a royal visit to the UK. They will be guests of the Queen at Buckingham Palace, staying from Tuesday until Friday, with a busy itinerary that includes an address at the Palace of Westminster and a trip to see Theresa May at Downing Street.
