Prince William has taken Prince George to his first day of school at St Thomas's Battersea in London. The Duchess of Cambridge, who had planned to join them, was too unwell. She is suffering from acute morning sickness from her third pregnancy.

Looking slightly nervous, 4-year-old George was pictured wearing the school uniform of navy shorts, a blue V-neck jumper emblazoned with the school's emblem, a light blue polo shirt, blue socks and black shoes. His father held his hand (as well as his rucksack) as he shook hands with the headmistress, who was escorting him to the reception classroom.

Photographer Chris Jackson, who took the official pictures of the prince this morning, said: 'The first day of school is an exciting time for any child, and it was great to see Prince George with a big smile on his face next to Dad, The Duke of Cambridge, ahead of their first school run together in this photograph I took this morning.'

The milestone was no doubt emotional for father William, who will remember his own first day of school at Wetherby differently. He has previously spoken out about how the presence of numerous photographers and press at his first day was not something he wanted repeated for George.

The £18,000-a-year school has some notable alumni, in the form of Florence Welch, Cara Delevingne and actress Charlotte Ritchie. It hit the headlines earlier this week after a local woman was able to walk inside the building without being stopped, leading to concerns about security. The school has insisted that new procedures will be in place as of today, the first day of term.

Royals attending school is a relatively new tradition. Princes William and Harry were the first to go - with their father Prince Charles being taught by a governess until age 8.
