Fleabag won big at the Golden Globes - and Phoebe Waller-Bridge used her acceptance speech to shoutout a special someone. That someone being Barack Obama, the former president of the United States, who recently included Fleabag in his list of his top TV shows and movies. (Yes, that’s even though in the first episode of season one, Fleabag is caught masturbating to Obama speeches by her boyfriend.)
Amazingly, Fleabag took home Best TV Show – Comedy or Musical, with Phoebe also being crowned Best Actress. And cheekily Phoebe used the acceptance speech for Best TV Show to make a not-so-subtle reference to the first episode. ‘I would like to thank Obama for putting us on his list,’ she said, adding, ‘And as some of you may know, he’s always been on mine. If you don’t get that joke, please watch season one of Fleabag really, really quickly.’
Obviously, the internet loved the raunchy joke as much as we did, with one user tweeting, ‘Phoebe Waller-Bridge thanking Obama and making a joke in reference to THAT scene is gold.’ Another added that they couldn’t quite believe Queen Bey was giggling with PWB: ‘Beyoncé laughed at Phoebe Waller-Bridge's joke about Obama...so that means she watched #Fleabag right? We watched the same show?’
While the show did brilliantly at the ceremony, annoyingly The Hot Priest (aka Andrew Scott) missed out on winning best supporting actor, with Chernobyl’s Stellan Skarsgård taking home the trophy instead.
Phoebe looked fierce in a Ralph & Russo power suit - and, if you’ve got the money, you will actually be able to get your hands on the exact number, as Variety report she is auctioning the suit to raise money for the Australian bushfire relief fund. ‘It’s a beautiful idea from the team, so I’m really excited to be a part of that,’ she said, speaking about the idea backstage.
