It's nearly time for the biggest event in Hollywood's calendar - we're talking about the 88th annual Academy Awards, or Oscars, which will take place in the Dolby Theatre on Sunday evening. While we'll be watching (and live-blogging...) keenly to see whether Leonardo DiCaprio will finally take home a golden Oscar statuette - and, on a more serious note, to see whether the Academy finally addresses the #OscarsSoWhite diversity row - we'll also be keeping one eye firmly on the red carpet. The Oscars are a bit like the Fashion Olympics, with the planet's most genetically blessed A-listers bringing their style A-game in a bid to be crowned 'Best Dressed.'
While some of the nominees are lucky enough to have bagged long-standing 'agreements' with leading fashion houses (Jennifer Lawrence exclusively wears Dior, while rising star Alicia Vikander will be wearing Louis Vuitton), others prefer to mix it up from ceremony to ceremony - making the red carpet guessing game all the more entertaining. Here are some of our style predictions...
Cate Blanchett
Armani Privé is a winning formula for Cate - she wore a dazzling beaded gown by the designer in 2014 to pick up her Best Actress award for Blue Jasmine. Lilac was a standout shade at the Paris couture shows last month, and either the show-stopping embellished number on the right or the floatier fairytale style would be beautiful choices - with just enough edge for risk-taking Cate.
Brie Larson
Room's Brie Larson has been in her ascendancy this awards season, picking up the Golden Globe, the BAFTA and the SAG Award - to name but a few. What better way to announce her intention to claim the Best Actress Oscar than by wearing Chanel Couture? Brie looked amazing in light blue at the SAGs, so we think the beaded gown on the left would look perfect, while the embellished jumpsuit would be a more esoteric, but equally lovely, choice.
Rooney Mara
When it comes to her red carpet choices, Carol star Rooney Mara, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress, can always be depended on to opt for something off-beat, ethereal yet totally breathtaking - which is exactly how we'd describe Sarah Burton's latest collection for Alexander McQueen, unveiled in London last week. One of these strikingly embellished gowns would be a winning choice for Rooney.
Saoirse Ronan
Best Actress hopeful Saoirse Ronan wears pastels and pale hues like no one else - see her Critics' Choice and Golden Globes gowns for evidence - so she'd look great in either of these Ralph & Russo creations. We reckon she could totally pull off the powder blue headband on the right, too.
Rachel McAdams
Rachel, whose role in Spotlight has gained her a Best Supporting Actress nomination, tends to opt for subtly eye-catching feminine styles on the red carpet. Her colouring would look amazing in this dramatic red tulle Giambattista Valli style, while the patterned white gown would be a lower-key choice.
