We always thought writing a hit song would be the hardest part of being in a girl band, but turns out the real difficulty comes way before that. Choosing a stellar band name? Well, that’s the biggest battle of them all.
You want something catchy. A name that makes people want to look you up on Spotify after a boozy night out upon recommendation from your BFF. 'This R&B group is amazing. They're called TLC...' It sticks.
But, as it so happens, TLC wasn't even their first choice. Yup, even some of the most iconic girl bands of all-time have had the dilemma of choosing a great stage name. Settling on their now-globally-famous moniker took some trial and error.
It’s hard to picture a world without the Spice Girls. Or Destiny’s Child. Their original names could have sounded, er, very different indeed...
Original Girl Band Names - Grazia
Spice Girls
Original name: TouchGinger Spice — sorry, we mean Geri Horner — penned an essay for Marie Claire on how the Spice Girls came to be the ultimate girl band, and let slip some surprising trivia. 'Ideas for band names were kicked around. "Touch" was suggested by our management team. (It didn't stick, obviously.),' Geri admitted. 'We were so different and our name had to feel like us, so we asked ourselves: What could fit all of us and show that diversity? I was in an aerobics class, and as I was stepping from side to side, "Spice" popped into my head. I ran back to our house, and as the girls stood at the top of the stairs peering down at me, I called out, "What about Spice?" They all looked at one another and nodded in agreement. The "Girls" in Spice Girls came later, as whenever we showed up somewhere, people would refer to us as the Spice girls.'
Destiny's Child
Original Name: Girl's TymeIn the early '90s Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams performed under the name Girls Tyme (with three other members). Bey's father, their manager at the time, also toyed with names including; Something Fresh, Cliché, the Dolls, and Destiny before deciding upon their final (and obviously the best) girl band name in 1996.
Fifth Harmony
Original name: LylasAs in, 'love you like a sister.' The US female equivalent to One Direction formed during the second season of the X Factor in 2012. While originally named LYLAS, another band called The Lylas kicked up a fuss. Then came 1432. Until finally landing on Fifth Harmony, chosen by the US public. Good choice, audience.
TLC
Original Name: 2nd NatureThe No Scrubs hit-makers ended up with their third band name option. After renaming themselves TLC-Skee, with 'TLC' being an acronym for the group members' names (Tionne, the late Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes, and Crysta), they finally shortened it to simply TLC, when they were signed in 1991.
Little Mix
Original name: RhythmixAccording to their IMDb biography, Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall originally called themselves Rhythmix, but had to change it after a Brighton-based charity with the same name caused a fuss.
The Bangles
Original name: The BangsHmm, I mean the '80s band did have some epic fringes at the height of their fame. Although evidently their love of accessories won in the end.
The Supremes
Original name: The PrimettesThe Primettes were formed in the late '50s in Detroit, Michigan. But the trailblazing trio, with Diana Ross as lead singer, achieved global success with The Supremes in the mid-1960s.
B*Witched
Original name: Butterfly FarmWho could forget the Irish girl band who delighted us with '90s gems like C'est la Vie? But C'mon Butterfly Farm? B*Witched is clearly the ultimate pop band name. And don't even get us started on the OTT denim stage outfits. Lush.
