It might be a normal Thursday in the UK, but, over in America, it is Thanksgiving. (So, Happy Thanksgiving{ =nofollow}, Americans!) To celebrate, the Obamas have shared a gorgeous, previously unseen family portrait.

Sharing the pic, which includes now grown-up daughters Malia and Sasha, Michelle wrote on Instagram, ‘From our family to yours, #HappyThanksgiving!’ Putting the number of likes we get to shame, the post has already got 5 million likes - which within 17 hours is pretty good going.

Now, as you can tell, all of the Obamas seem to be adhering to a different dress code (Michelle, glam mom; Sasha, full glam; Barack{ =nofollow}, dad on holiday; Malia, cute and trendy) but it makes sense when you find out that this picture was taken just before Sasha, then 17, was going to prom. (She went with a date, Chris Milton.)

In her best-selling memoir Becoming, Michelle wrote about meeting old sister's Malia’s prom date - and it sounds a bit more high pressure for the guys than your regular prom date, as they were flanked by security. ‘Barack and I shook the young man’s hand, snapped a few pictures, and gave our daughter a hug before sending them on their way,’ she wrote. ‘We took what was perhaps unfair comfort in the knowledge that Malia’s security detail would basically ride the boy’s bumper all the way to the restaurant where they were going for dinner before the dance and would remain on quiet duty throughout the night.’

Sasha is now 18, and has just started studying at the University of Michigan. Her sister, Malia, is also at university, in her third year. She took a gap year in 2016 before enrolling at Harvard University, where her parents attended law school.
