Niall Horan{ =nofollow}might be a popstar, but he’s not afraid to get political. The former One Direction singer gave his thoughts on the coronavirus pandemic yesterday - and, much to the delight of fans, he didn’t hold back. Yesterday, he directed his ire at health secretary Matt Hancock, branding him ‘smug and slippery’, saying he’s had a ‘major howler’ in how he’s handled the virus.

‘I get the idea that Health secretary Matt Hancock thinks he’s a lot more intelligent than he actually is,’ he tweeted. ‘Always very smug and slippery. Excuse me but Matt you’ve had a major howler here and it’s about time you handed facts out instead of worrying about what the opposition thinks.’

Immediately, there were calls for the Irish musician to ‘run for prime minister’ (and from his American and Irish fans, to run for president). ‘Can Niall just be in charge of the country, he would do a much better job,’ one person replied, adding, ‘he has common sense!’ Some of his international listeners had absolutely no idea what he was talking about - yet still admired that he was speaking out, with bemused replies like: ‘idk who's Matt but I totally agree with you.’

Hancock has come under increasing pressure over the government's response to the pandemic, with many asking why so many people have died in care homes and why it took so long to ramp up testing. This week in particular, the government has faced criticism for changing their messaging from 'stay home' to 'stay alert', while the advice to 'stay home' remains the same for Scotland and Wales.

Even though former PM David Cameron made a cameo in their Comic Relief One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks) music video, the One Direction lads - aside from Niall, who has spoken out about Trump and Brexit in the past - rarely get political. It's still a bold move for Niall to make, though - and he might have even gained a few more fans from those who also feel let down by the government.
