‘Um, yeah so I’m actually quite busy this weekend’, is the knee-jerk reaction when your pals/parents/partner attempt to make plans when you need to watch just one more episode (or five) of Stranger Things. When you’re obsessed with a new programme that’s landed on the online streaming site, it seems our social life takes a back seat.
The good news? There’s a scientific reason behind your bingeing on shows from Gilmore Girls to Orange Is the New Black. Analysing user habits, Netflix has released results of a new study that’s pin-pointed the exact moment your TV addiction takes over.
The ‘hooked findings’ revealed it took just three episodes of Stranger Things and Baz Luhrmann's ‘70s-set hip-hop drama The Get Down to entice viewers in. Whereas Making A Murderer mania took four episodes and seven for family drama Gilmore Girls.
‘We've always known there is a commonality to great stories,’ says Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix. ‘The findings give us confidence that there is an appetite for original and unique content, which is why we're excited to deliver variety in stories to our members, whether they're political dramas from France or musical dramas from the Bronx.’
So there you have it. You can now feel a little less guilty about catching up on American Horror Story tonight, because, er, we can’t help it right? And with gripping dramas and documentaries landing this Autumn on Netflix from The Crown to Amanda Knox we’re gearing up for quite a few nights in thank you…
