Natalie Portman is the latest actress to speak out against Hollywood's endemic sexism, arguing that women are all too often painted as two-dimensional 'objects of desire.'
The 35-year-old actress, who has just received a Best Actress BAFTA nomination for her role in Jackie, told Radio Times that women are faced with a lack of decent film parts, and are objectified all too often on screen.
'We are so often put in roles as objects of desire, with a male view, as opposed to subjects of desire with complex weaknesses, and moments of strength and focus,' she said, adding that women can, of course, 'be all of those things.'
Asked whether things have improved in Hollywood - and whether such roles might be on the increase - the actress gave a resounding 'no,' and argued that this might be due to a wider 'problem' with women in power.
Portman, who campaigned for Hillary Clinton ahead of last year's US election, said that 'we're having a problem with female leadership - in business, in government, in storytelling. We're still having a problem, first with women in that position, and second there are so many obstacles in their way.'
However, while the election did not go the way that Portman wanted, the actress believes that there is still a 'silver lining' to Trump's victory: 'It's that I feel very engaged politically and I think a lot of other people do, too'
'It has woken people up, to be engaged citizens in a different way.'
