BAFTA Nominations 2017: La La Land Leads The Race

La La Land

It looks like Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's La La Land is set to continue its dominance of awards season. After winning every category in which it was nominated at Sunday night's Golden Globes ceremony, the musical has notched up 11 BAFTA nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Leading Actor and Actress nods for Gosling and Stone.

Close behind it, however, are Tom Ford's second directorial effort, Nocturnal Animals, and Arrival, a heart-breaking piece of sci-fi led by Amy Adams. Though neither had a big night at the Golden GLobes (aside from a Best Supporting Actor win for Animals' Aaron Taylor Johnson, which was considered a bit of a wild card) both films have earned nine nominations. They are followed by Oscar favourite Manchester by the Sea, which has six, and Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake, the story of an eldery carpenter who is still considered 'fit for work' which won last year's Palme D'Or at Cannes.

While La La Land's Gosling and Stone earned an award apiece on Sunday, it's pretty unlikely that particular winning streak will continue: unlike at the Globes, there is only one Best Actor and Actress category at the BAFTAs (and, later on, at the Academy Awards) meaning that the race will be much tighter. Stone's main rival is thought to be Natalie Portman, nominated for her portrayal of the former First Lady in Jackie, though she also faces competition from Amy Adams, Meryl Streep and - curveball - The Girl On The Train's Emily Blunt.

Gosling, meanwhile, will be up against Andrew Garfield, nominated for Hacksaw Ridge, fellow Globe winner Casey Affleck (in the Best Actor - Drama category), Nocturnal Animals' Jake Gyllenhaal and Captain Fantastic's Viggo Mortensen.

Given that the Harry Potter franchise has become something of a British film-making institution, it's perhaps unsurprising that spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them has earned five nominations, including Outstanding British Film and nods in a clutch of technical categories.

Earlier this year, BAFTA revealed a new initiative to address the lack of diversity in both its membership and British film, announcing changes to its membership and to the criteria for the outstanding British film and outstanding debut awards: the nominees for these BAFTA categories must now conform to the BFI's Diversity Standards, and prove that they have created opportunities for ethnic minorities and the socially disadvantaged. This won't come into effect until 2019, however.

The BAFTAs will be held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday 12th February. Until then, catch up on all the major categories below...
