Alongside the inevitable debate about who will bag the highly coveted gold statues, ahead of the Oscars, there is always much speculation about the sartorial choices of the big stars. And this year, one nominee’s outfit of choice has caused more controversy than ever.
Earlier this week, WWD published an interview with Karl Lagerfeld in which he accused Meryl Streep of enlisting a different designer to create her 2017 Oscars gown because she wanted to receive financial compensation. In Lagerfeld’s interview, the Creative Director at Chanel claimed that his team had started work on an embroidered gray silk gown before being informed by a representative of Streep that it was no longer needed.
As the story hit the press, Lagerfeld was quick to dismiss claims and called the whole saga a misunderstanding.
However, quite naturally, Streep is not happy with Lagerfeld’s behaviour.
"In reference to Mr. Lagerfeld's 'statement,' there is no 'controversy': Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist, and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication," Streep said in a statement to E! News.
Streep, who received her record breaking 20th Oscar nomination for her part in Florence Foster Jenkins, hit out Lagerfeld and his apology.
"That publication printed this defamation, unchecked. Subsequently, the story was picked up globally, and continues, globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars, on the occasion of my record breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues and the audience. I do not take this lightly, and Mr. Lagerfeld's generic 'statement' of regret for this 'controversy' was not an apology. He lied, they printed the lie, and I am still waiting," Streep continued.
