This hidden detail in her wedding dress has been described as 'the most romantic thing ever'

Meghan Markle’s simple but striking Givenchy wedding dress made headlines around the world on May 19th, and it’s now been revealed that the Duchess of Sussex’s gown also featured a secret tribute to her first date with Prince Harry.

In a newly released clip from Queen of the World, a two part ITV documentary that explores the Queen’s role as head of the Commonwealth, the Duchess is reunited with her Claire Waight Keller gown for the first time since the royal wedding, before it goes on display at a special exhibition at Windsor Castle.

As she re-inspects the dress, she points out to the interviewer that ‘somewhere in here, there’s a piece of material],’ before asking: ‘Did you see it? The piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside? The Duchess then goes on to explain that the fabric in question is ‘from the dress that [she] wore on [her] first date’ with her now husband, Prince Harry. Way to raise the stakes for [first date dressing, Meghan – and when her interviewer describes this detail as ‘just about the most romantic thing [she’s] ever heard,’ we’d be hard-pressed to argue (though this certainly adds a whole new element of pressure to the always tricky first date fashion conundrum...)

Meghan is not the only royal bride to follow tradition and incorporate ‘something blue’ into her wedding day ensemble: the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is thought to have had a blue ribbon sewn into her Alexander McQueen gown for her 2011 ceremony.

In the clip, Meghan also reveals that she didn’t see her 16-foot veil, which was embroidered with flowers from each of the 53 Commonwealth nations, until the morning of her wedding. ‘I knew that it would be a fun surprise as well for my now husband, who didn’t know, and he was really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together,’ she said. ‘And I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction, and just appreciation for the fact that we understand how important this is for us and the role that we play.’

Queen of the World will air on ITV on Tuesday 25th September at 9.15pm
