Meghan Markle has always been unfairly scrutinised by the press and the public - but, after her and Harry decided to leave the royal family, things only seem to have got worse. And it seemed to reach a boiling point after Harry and Meghan's interview with Oprah, which even led Meghan herself complaining to ITV about the cruel comments made by Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain.

From Piers to keyboard warriors, It seems like some people are hyper-fixated on Meghan, and, actually, it turns out that is the case when it comes to some of the trolling she is subject to, according to new evidence.

Earlier this week, Bot Sentinel, an analytics service for Twitter - which has also looked at the spread of Covid misinformation and racist abuse after the Euros 2020 final - found that of more than 114,000 tweets about the couple, 83 accounts were responsible for approximately 70% of the negative and often hateful content. It might be less than a hundred accounts, but the combined reach of these accounts is 187,631 followers.

It might be a targeted campaign, but even the CEO of Bot Sentinel is unsure why Meghan receives so much abuse .'Are these people who hate her? Is it racism? Are they trying to hurt [Harry and Meghan’s] credibility? Your guess is as good as ours,' Christopher Bouzy told BuzzFeed News. Speaking to the outlet, he also stressed that the campaign isn't being run by bot accounts, but real people. 'This campaign comes from people who know how to manipulate the algorithms, manipulate Twitter, stay under the wire to avoid detection and suspension,' he added.

Isn't it time more was done to protect women in the public eye, like Meghan, from online abuse?
