Here's why tennis fans are calling her a 'jinx'.

The stars were out in force to watch Serena Williams in a final of this year’s US Open: we’re talking Anna Wintour, Cara Delevigne. We’re talking Spike Lee, Taye Diggs, Gigi Hadid, and Meghan Markle – who’s now being called a ‘jinx’ by fans online, after Williams suffered another surprising defeat on the court as our very own duchess looked on.

It’s not the first time Meghan’s seen her friend lose a crucial match – and while that’s not something Serena is in the habit of doing, superstitious tennis aficionados cited Wimbeldon’s final (when Williams famously lost to Simona Halep) and last year’s SW19 when she was defeated by Angelique Kerber, as evidence (!?) of Meghan’s curse.

Yikes. Of course, it’s true that Meghan attended those games – and, as the world’s resident Woman Who Can Do No Right, she can now add ‘bad luck charm’ to her list of failings (not to mention the predictable drama over the fact that she travelled without baby Archie). One fan tweeted ‘Dear Meghan Markle please stop attending Serena's finals matches. You are a jinx. Signed fans who are not her friends’, while another wrote ‘Meghan. Duchess. Love you so much. Really do. Are you a jinx though? Has she been at most of the losses?’.

Hey, guys. Look. Meghan watched Serena WIN WIMBLEDON in 2016. It’s almost like there’s NO CORRELATION between Meghan looking on and Serena’s performance (weird?). They’ve been BFFs for years – in a Q&A on The Tig, Meghan revealed how they ‘hit it off immediately’ after meeting in 2014, and explained how Serena ‘quickly became a confidante I would text when I was traveling, the friend I would rally around for her tennis matches.’

She continued, ‘We are both the same age, have a penchant for hot sauces, and adore fashion, but what connects us more than those things is perhaps our belief in exceeding expectations – our endless ambition.’ And ambition isn’t picky. Good friends are there through the good times and the bad. They’re there when you win Wimbledon, and when you lose a US Open Final (or whatever the equivalent is for us mere mortals). Good friends get a last-minute flight – commercial! I know! – to support you when you need them most, and Meghan’s nothing if not a loyal pal to superstar Serena. The Duchess of Sussex, and the Duchess of Tennis – while women in the public eye remain targets for our weirdest and deepest prejudices, it’s great to see them having each other’s backs.
