Most of us have at some point had to adjust to the certain - ahem - slightly more unconventional things that our older relatives may come out with at any given moment.
This was the conundrum Meghan Marklefound herself in recently while visiting the Kensal Rise headquarters for Mayhew - an animal welfare charity that also works with people in the community that the Duchess of Sussex was recently made patron of alongside The National Theatre, The ACU and Smart Works. On greeting a group of local pensioners, the Duchess was referred to as a 'fat lady'. But the story behind it is actually really sweet, and as ever Meghan had an excellent response to hand that balanced just the right amount of class, dignity, respect and a touch of humour (does she have a secret earpieceto expertly navigate every awkward social situation? Evidence is mounting).
When Meghan was introduced to Gothrine McEachrom, who goes by the name Peggy, the pensioner said "What a lovely lady you are. May God bless you" adding "and you're a fat lady!" referring to the Duchesses growing bump. But rather than feeling deeply awkward (as 90% of us would have done) Meghan found the funny side and managed to laugh it off, responding with "I'll take it".
Peggy also suggested that she thought The Duchess was going to have a boy, she went on to say "you’ll soon be having a little baby boy!” to which Meghan said “It’s a surprise. We don’t know what we’re having. I ask everyone what they think, and everyone has a very strong opinion about it.” The Duchess is now 6 months pregnant and her baby with Prince Harry is due in April. So far the couple have so far chosen to keep the gender a surprise, but while in Melbourne last year Prince Harry hinted that he's hoping for a girl.
As ever Meghan hit the sartorial nail on the head during the visit wearing a cream dress from H&M, Dean Davidson earrings, and an Armani coat.
