It was an event that only Meghan Markle could have masterminded. Except this time, she didn't!
Back in May of 2019, a pregnant Meghan flew to the US to mark the forthcoming arrival of Baby Archie for a baby shower. Co-organised by Serena Williams and Amal Clooney it was the most extravagant thing ever. Here's everything we know:
The Duchess of Sussex flew into the Big Apple on the Friday evening, after reportedly being lent a private jet by a Toronto-based friend.
After landing in NYC Meghan spent the first few days of her trip seeing friends and touring the city. On the Saturday she was spotted browsing for some children's clothes at high-end store Bonpoint, and on Monday she made a quick trip to the Met Breuer museum where she took in some of the artworks and bumped into one (we can only assume incredibly shell-shocked) visitor in the bathroom who had been there to see the Julio Le Parc exhibition. She immediately took to Instagram to share the experience, writing 'I went to see Julio le Parc at the Met Breuer and also ran into Meghan Markle in the bathroom'.
Once she'd taken in enough culture for the day Meghan accompanied her pal Abigail Spencer (who played Dana 'Scottie' Scott to her Rachel Zane in Suits) to The Cafe Boulud in The Surrey Hotel in Manhattan's Upper East side for lunch. Which, by all intents and purposes, looks like a very nice place to have lunch:
The night before the baby shower, Meghan had dinner with Serena Williams, her close friend, stylist Jessica Mulroney and Markus Anderson (The Soho house consultant who sources have said that the Duchess hired to help decorate Frogmore cottage before she moved in with Prince Harry). They chose The Polo Bar - which also happens to be a regular haunt for Donald Trump. Once again, no expenses were spared here, and although Meghan's obviously teetotal the venue has an impressive wine list with an $18,000 1891 Brunello Di Montalcino on the list (erm...pay day is coming up?).
At the end of the dinner, Meghan and Serena Williams left to spend Tuesday night at the same $75,000-a-night penthouse at The Mark hotel where the baby shower was also held, which Serena reportedly footed the bill for. The baby shower was organised for the the next day. But obviously, because it's Meghan Markle and she is literally gestating a future prince/princess right now, as you can guess there were some gifts in the lead up to it. Included on the present list, according to the Daily Mailwas a $140 Mandarin tree (just what every new mother needs?) and 17 suitcases from 'Away' (yes! 17! But more on what happened to those later).
So who were the lucky ones that made it onto Meghan's baby shower guest list? The early arrivals for the five-hour event were the obvious ones: Abigail Spencer was the first to rock closely followed by Daniel Martin who did Meghan's bridal makeup for her wedding to Prince Harry last May. Amal Clooney, Serena Williams and Markus Anderson were all obviously in attendance and other guests included Misha Nonoo, who is credited for introducing Meghan and Harry. Trainer Taryn Toomey (who's fans of her program The Class include Naomi Watts and Jennifer Aniston), Fashion Publicist Celina Kharavani, CBS anchor Gayle King and a couple of friends and sorority sisters from Meghan's time at Northwestern University including old pal Lindsay Roth were also there.
A harpist was seen showing up at The Mark, so if you happened to have been one of the lucky ones who got an invite we're assuming that on arrival and throughout the shower, guests were treated to harp music while milling around the Penthouse. Brace yourself for some interiors envy, because it was a seriously luxurious venue: boasting five bedrooms, four fireplaces, six bathrooms, two powder rooms, two wet bars, a dining room, a conservatory, and a living room that can be 'transformed into a full-size Grand Ballroom' (and a bit of trivia: it was also designed by the famous french interior designer Jacques Grange). Apparently Serena Williams - who's a big fan of The Mark made the choice of location.
After arriving at the shower, things kicked off with a flower arranging session and a dessert-tasting of confections prepared especially by The Mark's head chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. A candy-floss machine was also delivered to the venue and it's suggested that the 17 Away suitcases that were gifted to Meghan by the brand (approximately worth $3,825) were re-gifted to guests at the end of the evening. Which would officially be the most millennial party favor to receive, ever - the suitcase brand is an Instagram favourite and Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber are both fans.
