Margot Robbie is set to play Maid Marian in a new film that promises to put a feminist spin on the traditional Robin Hood tale.

From Disney’s animation to Prince of Thieves, Maid Marian has mostly been side-lined as a love interest in the Robin Hood stories we’ve seen on screen so far. Described as ‘Braveheart meets Game of Thrones’ by Variety, Marian looks set to redress this. Set after the death of Robin, Margot’s character will take on his cause, eventually leading a resistance army into battle.

According to Variety: ‘After a conspiracy to conquer England in which the love of her life Robin Hood dies before her eyes, Marian picks up the cause to lead her people into a pivotal war.’

‘She comes to power, charging into a battle that will not only decide the fate of the kingdom but will see her don the mantle of the man she loved. In the process, she rises as a legend herself.’ We can practically see the trailer already…

Lucky Chap Entertainment, Margot’s production company, will be overseeing the project.

The Robin Hood story has clearly taken a hold of Hollywood’s collective imagination recently: already in the works is Robin Hood: Origins, an unrelated project which will see Taron Egerton as the man in green, joined by Jamie Dornan and Jamie Foxx. A sci-fi Robin Hood is also slated to begin production this year.

Margot will next be seen in an as-yet-untitled biopic of Winnie The Pooh creator A. A. Milne, opposite Domhnall Gleeson, and is currently filming another biopic, I, Tonya, which will tell the story of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding. She’ll also reprise Harley Quinn in Gotham City Sirens, a Suicide Squad spin-off movie that focuses on a handful of DC’s female comic book villains.
