Oh, Casa Amor. There’s nothing like a second villa and 12 new contestants to shake things up on Love Island. Leaving destroyed relationships and crushed romantic dreams in its wake, the now predictable but still cruel twist has long had its controversies. In fact, year after year Ofcom is barraged with viewers’ complaints and this series is no different.
As reported by The Sun, the communications regulator has revealed that they have received triple the amount of complaints since last night’s episode, as upset fans worry about Shaughna Phillips’ mental health and wellbeing as the Casa Amor recoupling looms near.
A fan favourite from the start, Shaughna has been plagued with worry about current partner Callum Jones and his antics in Casa Amor. As regular viewers will know, Callum has quickly and enthusiastically been 'turned' by Molly Smith, whereas Shaughna has been regularly sharing her fears with fellow contestant Paige Turley.
In a teaser for tonight's show, the boys in Casa Amor get a text saying that there will be a recoupling before they re-join the main villa. ‘Shaughna's going to go f**king mad,’ Callum says. ‘Everyone's going to hate me.’
Whereas, in a particularly suspenseful first look tweeted by Love Island, we see that Shaughna has decided to choose Callum and not to re-couple with a new Islander.
This year’s response echoes that of 2018, when Ofcom revealed that they had received 2,500 complaints about show winner Dani Dyer breaking down over her relationship with Jack Fincham with some saying that the show was emotionally manipulating Dani.
While at the time, some viewers found Dani’s emotional reaction 'really hard to watch', Ofcom later declared they wouldn’t be taking the matter any further as they didn’t feel Love Island breached any of their guidelines.
Earlier this week, Casa Amor came under new fire when last year's contestant Amy Hart described the experience as ‘pure hell’ and ‘mentally torturous’ on Twitter.
Following up, she added: ‘And before people say “you know what you signed up for” we knew it was coming, but I never knew five days could be that long (should have just gone home).’
