Irish gentleman and hunky rugby player Greg O’Shea walked into the Love Island villa and then walked out as part of the winning couple alongside Amber Gill (aka the queen of Newcastle and our hearts) in the space of a few weeks. They’re the nation’s darlings and so they should be. They are all the proof you need that someone can come along and whisk you off your feet even when you’ve been messed around so much by the same guy (hello, Michael) and never want to make eye contact with anyone else ever again. Just in case. However, they’re also one of the only remaining couples from this year that have yet to put a label on their relationship.
During some recent cute time together in Greg’s hometown, Greg was seen teasing Amber about the fact that she’s full of love for him even though he hasn’t asked her to be his girlfriend yet.
In a video posted on his Instagram story, he tells Amber: "So I haven’t even asked her to be my girlfriend yet and she’s saying on live that she loves me.
"What do you have to say about that? It's been four weeks! You said you love me!"
We need more of this. Sometimes, especially on reality TV, we get so invested in the sweet story of how two people fell in love that we ruin them as soon as they crash back to reality. We want the TV shows, we want them to move in together, we want them to get the puppy that we don’t really care if it destroys them in the process. The whole ‘keeping up appearances’ narrative is a scary one.
Take Jack Fincham and Dani Dyer from last year, and Olivia Attwood and Chris Hughes from the year before that. They fell apart and it wasn’t pretty.
Jack recently revealed on Celebs Go Dating that he felt “rushed” in the months after leaving the villa.
"If we had lived in Love Island forever, we’d have been fine.
"We rushed it straight away, we moved in together. I did want to [move in with her] but I wish we had waited.
"I let her rush me a little bit. We had a genuine connection in there and I think anyone can see that. Honestly, and I mean this, I wish her all the happiness in the world.”
Greg and Amber have been busy doing countless TV interviews, having endless meetings about what they can do to maximise their assets (or bank balances) and appearing on TV shows like Loose Women. They’ve got it good and they clearly don’t want to jeopardise anything ruining it. We’re rooting for them, official or not official.
