It was pretty obvious that Katy Perry wasn’t going to make it to the MTV Video Music Awards last night - apart from the fact that the awards - basically the first large scale awards ceremony since lockdown began in March was v. different this year (face masks, social distancing and outdoor performances without an audience), Perry gave birth to her daughter Daisy Dive, her first child with Orlando Bloom just five days ago. Which, for the uninitiated, is very much still the maternity pads, sore stitches, wtf is going on with my nipples stage of postpartum life. So even for a superstar of Katy Perry proportions, turning up to a red carpet event would have been a stretch (you can’t really a breast bump in those teeny tiny red carpet clutch bags for one thing).

She still managed to make her presence known however, with an Insta story pic of her in the bathroom mirror at home in a nursing bra with pump attachments, big pants, and about as much hair and makeup as you’d expect the parents of a five-day old to be wearing (read: none). She’s captioned the picture 'Hair and makeup by: @exhaustion,’ 'Underwear by @Fridamom’ and 'Bra by @medela_us.’ I almost don’t want to reference the fact that you can see Perry’s postpartum tummy, which is noteworthy insofar as she looks exactly like every other woman who’s just given birth. But it's still a huge rarity to see such post-birth honesty from A-listers. so there you go.

VMAs 2020 red carpet looks
Sofia Carson
Sofia Carson's ruffled gown by Giambattista Valli certainly wins the showstopper award of the night.
Nicole Richie
Nicole Richie presented an award in this stunning mini dress with train.
Madison Beer
Madison Beer made us all hanker for the days of the LBD (remember when parties were a thing?) in this Mugler dress.
Lady Gaga
The awards were Lady Gaga's night with the singer picking up five awards. She also owned the red carpet in this space-inspired outfit.
Bella Hadid
Bella Hadid rolled out the v. Famous model version of a nice top and trousers for this year's awards, and looked amazing
Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus wore a sheer Mugler dress for her first live performance of 'Midnight Sky'
Joey King
Joey King wore a floral Versace mini dress.
Jaden Smith
We weren't really expecting Jaden Smith to inspire us to start thinking about winter knits this evening, but there you go
Bebe Rexha
Cycling shorts on the red carpet? Definitely not the strangest thing to happen in 2020.
Machine Gun Kelly
Machine Gun Kelly reminds us (again) that pink, and red carpet dressing, isn't just for girls.
Doja Cat
We're loving this fringed Versace dress.
Obviously we can file this picture under ‘highly relatable,’but the fact that there’s no dirty nappy or a weeping, exhausted Orlando Bloom on the floor behind her suggests that they’re doing ok with this new-parent malarkey.
