As birth announcements go, it’s a pretty classy one. Katy Perry has welcomed her baby daughter with actor fiancé Orlando Bloom, and the pair have used the good news as an opportunity to draw attention to a good cause.

Katy and Orlando have confirmed the birth of Daisy Dove Bloom, via a tweet from UNICEF. The couple are both Goodwill Ambassadors for the children’s charity, which helps the world’s most disadvantaged in more than 190 countries.

‘We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter,’ the statement reads. ‘But we know we’re the lucky ones and not everyone can have a birthing experience as peaceful as ours was. Communities around the world are still experiencing a shortage of healthcare workers and every eleven seconds a pregnant woman or newborn dies, mostly from preventable causes.’

They also addressed how the coronavirus pandemic has made a global problem even worse. ‘Since COVID-19, many more newborn lives are at risk because of a greater lack of access to water, soap, vaccines and medicines that prevent diseases. As parents to a newborn, this breaks our hearts, as we empathize with struggling parents now more than ever.’

They added that a donation page will be set up to mark Daisy’s birth, allowing fans to contribute to a ‘healthier world for every child.’

Katy announced her pregnancy in March, proudly exhibiting a bump in the video for her song Never Worn White. This is her first child, and Orlando's second: he has a son with Australian model Miranda Kerr.

Congratulations both! And kudos for the classy way of making it known. Definitely beats an announcement in The Times.
