We might all be well aware of the gender pay gap when it comes to women in Hollywood, but many are still naïve to the race pay gap that continues to impact women of colour. Jessica Chastain was certainly unaware until it came up in conversation with her fellow actor, Octavia Spencer.

Octavia shared her story on a Women Breaking Barriers panel at Sundance Film Festival, telling the crowd that their conversation about pay equity actually led to a huge pay rise for the award-winning actor.

The pair worked together on The Help, when they began discussing pay equity, with Octavia telling Jessica:

‘Here’s the thing, women of color on that spectrum, we make far less than white women,’

‘So, if we’re gonna have that conversation about pay equity, we gotta bring the women of color to the table.’

Jessica admitted she didn’t realise that her non-white peers were being paid less than they’re worth, and upon finding out this terrible fact decided to fight for both her and Octavia to be paid equally.

‘She said, “Octavia we’re gonna get you paid on this film. You and I are gonna be tied together. We’re gonna be favored nations, and we’re gonna make the same thing.” Fast forward to last week, we’re making five times what we asked for.’

‘I love that woman, because she’s walking the walk and she’s actually talking the talk.’

Octavia’s point highlights just how important it is that those who consider themselves white allies to racial injustice must go beyond just supporting the cause vocally and actually act when they see unequal treatment.

She finished her heartwarming anecdote with the promise to aim even higher in future, adding: ‘Now, I wanna go to what the men are making!’

It’s about time.

Watch the entire fabulously illuminating panel below (skip to 19.30 if you want to here Octavia's story).
