Just likeJennifer Aniston before him, when Jay-Z belatedly joined Instagram yesterday, the internet pretty much went into meltdown. Within a day, the rapper amassed an eye-watering 1.8million followers. The only person he followed on the account was his superstar wife Beyoncé, who also returned the favour and followed him back, making him the only person she followed.
But now Beyoncé's follower count is back down to zero, as Jay-Z has already deleted his Instagram account. Probably making this one of the biggest social media power moves this year. Hats off to Jay-Z for realising that, if you don't have Insta in 2021, you're probably better off without it.
It also looks like Jay-Z's brief stint on the photo sharing app was to promote The Harder They Fall, an action-packed Western with an all-Black cast including Idris Elba{
Jay-Z isn't the only famous name to join Instagram recently. Angelina Jolie broke the Guinness World Record this summer to become the fastest person to reach one million followers, stealing the crown from previous record holders NCTʼs Taeil Moon and Rupert Grint.
David Attenborough also held the record when he joined the site last year, but after three months, like Jay-Z, he deleted his account - because he got too many messages. 'I’m not on it anymore and I don’t intend to go back,' he said. 'I’ve got enough problems with post. I get 70 letters a day. I do my very best (to respond to them all).'
