Love Island may be long over, but Ovie Soko is still the most beloved man in the UK. This was proven yesterday when fans rushed to support him after rumours circled that India Reynolds – his girlfriend and Love Island partner – had cheated on him, and the couple had split.
India quickly quashed the rumours, with her representatives telling the Evening Standard, ‘There is no truth in this whatsoever and Ovie and India are still very much together and happy.’ However, it was the reaction of online commentators that is much more interesting to watch.
When the news broke that Ovie and India had split up, Twitter went into overdrive. Thousands of memes were shared celebrating Ovie’s new single status and many a cross word thrown in India’s direction – before there had even been one comment from either of their camps.
It’s not surprising, of course, that people would blindly believe a Love Island cheating rumour – but what is striking about the reaction is just how difficult a position India is in. It's not hard to imagine how daunting it is to be with a man who can do no wrong in the eyes of the public?
If they actually broke up now, India would be a marked woman. Regardless of the reasons behind any split, India would undoubtedly come off worse when it comes to public approval. It’s not Ovie’s fault – after all, he can’t help being so damn lovable– but it is concerning to think just how much pressure India must be under.
You either stay together, very well aware that everyone is waiting for the downfall of your relationship so they can swoop in on your partner. Or the relationship inevitably (sorry to be a Debbie downer) fails and that reputation you spent months building – in and out of Love Island – dissolves.
The situation says a lot about the purpose of Love Island in 2019. We used to be enthralled by the romantic storylines and ensuing relationships; we’re now more interested in individual personalities – to be hated or adored.
This was evident on this season more than ever given how few couples actually seemed to progress. And the fact that Amber and Greg won is proof. Let’s be honest, Amber won that show alone – it was nothing to do with her relationship with Greg. She won because of her personal journey.
If Ovie had of been in there longer, there’s no doubt he would’ve had a better shot at the top spot regardless of who he was with. And despite leaving the villa, the narrative continues to play out. The former contestants are still relying on the impact of their personal storyline to maintain interest, and it’s working for most of them. Just not India...
The reality is we don't know the Love Island contestants – and we don't know what's going on in any of those relationships. To adore or admonish any former Love Island contestant at this point is unfair, because – thankfully – they’re not living their lives on TV anymore and taking over every evening of our life.
