Grimes, the Canadian singer, has always marched to a different drum. Her music, her vocals, her style: they have all endeared her to legions of fans who love her slightly eccentric ways, and she proved that it's more than artifice by naming her son - with her billionaire partner Elon Musk - X Æ A-Xii Musk. And she's at it again: she is now selling a piece of her soul to the highest bidder.

Yep, you read that right.

Grimes’ art is featured in a new online exhibition named Selling Out, with several pieces on offer including prints, sketches and photographs. The most eye-catching item? A piece also called Selling Out which, the press materials claim, comes with a claim to her very soul.

'Selling Out, a conceptual artwork that lends its title to the exhibition, is the culmination of Grimes’ holistic art practice', the official release reads. 'It expands upon the conceit of partitioning and re-administering one’s identity, whose art is their soul. Selling Out is executed as a contract in which Grimes sells a fraction of her soul, formalising the idea that every time an artist sells a piece of their art, part of the soul is sold with it. The purchaser will enter into a contractual agreement that outlines the terms of ownership and ultimately the connection to the joy of artistic expression.'

The concept of selling ones soul is most associated with devil worship and the occult, whereby murky characters offer the precious commodity to dark powers in exchange for a change in fortune or a long-desired ambition. For Grimes, though, it seems to be all about making a statement.

The exhibition is co-hosted by two US galleries, Gallery Platform Los Angeles and Maccarone Los Angeles.
