Brace yourselves: awards season is now in full swing, and next up on the Hollywood calendar is this weekend's Golden Globes ceremony.

The Globes aren't just yet another excuse for the world's most beautiful people to get dressed up in equally beautiful clothes (though that's half the fun, right?) - it's a ceremony which recognises standout work in film and television over the last year, and often ends up predicting the Oscar wins a month ahead of time. It's also famously the biggest party on the circuit - if we could get a slot on the guest list for any awards show (please?), we know which one we'd pick...

On the night, there was one film that dominated: La La Land, the musical love letter to Hollywood starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, won in every category in which it was nominated, picking up nods for Best Director, Best Picture and a Best Actor and Actress trophy apiece for Stone and Gosling. In terms of the sheer number of trophies taken home, no other picture could come close. It'll certainly be interesting to see whether this clean sweep will continue all the way through awards season.

It was also a good night for British TV, with The Night Manager and The Crown picking up a handful of prestigious gongs. If you've not binge-watched your way through them already, consider the HFPA's approval as (yet another) excuse to do so.

Aside from Aaron Taylor Johnson's unexpected success in the Best Supporting Actor category (picking up an award we'd all assumed was ear-marked for Moonlight's Mahershala Ali), the biggest surprise of the night was arguably when Stranger Things' Barb came 'back from the dead' in Jimmy Fallon's opening sequence...

When and where do the Golden Globes take place?

This year's Globes ceremony took place on Sunday 8th January, and will be held at the Beverly Hilton in LA. Things kicked off at 8pm Eastern Time and 5pm Pacific Time - that's 1am over here...

How can we watch the red carpet arrivals?

You're in luck: the lovely people at Twitter will be broadcasting a live stream from the red carpet, presented by awards season veterans Guiliana Rancic and Ryan Seacrest. If you've got access to E!, they'll be reporting from 11pm, too.

Who will presented this year's awards?

Chat show host Jimmy Fallon presided over the ceremony, while individual awards were be presented by a mix of past winners, Hollywood royalty and other famous faces. Golden statues were handed out by the likes of Brie Larson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Emma Stone and everyone's favourite chap, Matt Damon.

The Globes are just like the Oscars, right?

Wrong! The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (that's the voting body for the Golden Globes) hand out gongs for achievement in television as well as film: this year, The Night Manager, The People Vs. OJ Simpson and The Crown picked up a clutch of noms. Another key difference is that the Globes categorise their nominees by genre: for example, instead of just one Best Actress race, there's one for Best Drama and another for Best Comedy or Musical (we know, the categories are pretty loose...) This widens the field a little, and allows the HFPA a better scope to recognise a standout performance that might otherwise get elbowed out of the way in the awards season scramble.

That said, the Globes can often be used to predict the pictures and performances that will win big at the Oscars, particularly in the major categories: after scooping a Globe last year, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brie Larson went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actor and Actress respectively.

Who was nominated?
