The start of a new year can mean only one thing, award season is upon us! To kick things off we have the Golden Globes 2015 - the Awards Ceremony Season entree - the pre-bAFTAs bonaza, the Oscars 'warm-up', the... (you get our drift).

And what a year it's been for film. Mad Max: Fury Road, Joy, Carol, not to mention the soon-to-be-released-in-the-UK-film-we-totally-cannot-wait-for: The Revenant...

Safe to say our enthusiasim is almost at bursting point. So, we thought we'd get to grips with everything worth knowing about this year's event! And make sure you catch our live blog of the action as it goes down.

Ricky Gervais Golden Globes 2016 Host

Ricky Gervais. He needs little introduction but in the unlikely event you don't know who he is, this may jog your memory...

Round about the time of the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais manages to morph (spectacularly) from 'that funny British guy', to top of Hollywood's most wanted list (in a not cool way). Why? Because the man refuses to censor. His parting words to the ceremony each year are: 'They're not inviting me back'.

Weirdly though, they do – in spite of everything. In honour of Ricky Gervais, here are some of his most outrageous Golden Globe gags:

2010: Saying to the crowd of Hollywood's finest: 'On a serious note, looking at all the faces here reminds me of some the great work that's been done this year... by cosmetic surgeons'.

Talking about an actor's need to be chameleon-like in their efforts to move from one role to another, and then introducing Jennifer Aniston as 'Rachel off Friends'.

2011: Introducing Bruce Willis as 'Ashton Kutcher's dad' (when Willis' ex-wife, Demi Moore, was still married to Kutcher), and later, Jennifer Lopez as 'just Jenny from the Block... if the block in question is that one on Rodeo Drive between Cartier and Prada.'

2012: Starting the ceremony with: 'For any of you who don't know, the Golden Globes are just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem. The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker, and more easily bought. Allegedly. Nothing's been proved.'

Then there was a three year Gervais hiatus (where Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took over), but this year, Ricky is back – set to be as controversial as ever. In fact, he's already apologised in advance for his jokes, but told *Hollywood Reporter *they will be 'topical' and 'justified'.

Golden Globes 2016 Presenters

These are made up of Hollywood A-listers and include Golden Globe winners from previous years.

Eddie Redmayne, Amy Adams, Patricia Arquette and Channing Tatum are all expected to present at the podium this Sunday... as is Mel Gibson, the perpetual butt of Gervais's jokes. Indeed on hearing news of Gibson's involvement, Gervais posted this to Twitter:
