At Sunday's Golden Globes, The Crown reigned supreme, - who played a formidable Margaret Thatcher in the series - caused a bit of confusion on the night, thanks to her American accent, which threw many fans off. 'It’s always thrilling to hear what accent Gillian Anderson is going to choose at any given moment,' one viewer noted.
Gillian herself revealed in her red carpet interview that she was speaking from a hotel room in Prague. And when accepting her award, she thanked her on/off partner, The Crown's creator Peter Morgan. 'Oh my God. Firstly, thank you very much to the Hollywood Foreign Press and to my fellow nominees and to Peter Morgan for imagining that I could inhabit Mrs. T,' she said.
So, is Gillian American or British?
We can see why people are confused - after all, apart from American series The X Files, we know and love Gillian for appearing in British programmes like Sex Education, Bleak House and The Fall, which was set in Northern Ireland. She has also spoken with a British accent during interviews, such as this appearance on Parkinson.
Gillian might now live in London, but she was actually born in the US, and grew up in Puerto Rico and London before returning to the States. (And then returning to London.) So it seems completely natural that her accent would fluctuate.
The actress has addressed her alternating accents before, calling herself 'bi-dialectal'.
'Even on the phone my accent will change,' Gillian once told The Telegraph. 'Part of me wishes I could control it, but I can’t. I just slip into one or the other. When I moved to the States I tried hard to cling on to my British accent because it made me different.'

If we continue to keep silent, the younger generation of artists will have the exact same load to carry. No more excuses. #TIMESUPGlobes #TIMESUP.'
