Receiving an Oscar nomination is a milestone in the career of any actor, and most will remember where they were when they received word of their achievement. That will definitely be the case for Florence Pugh. The 24-year-old has just discovered that she has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Amy March in Little Women, but when the call came through she wasn't actually even dressed.
Florence, who has starred in films including Fighting With My Family and Midsommar, posted two images on Instagram: one shows her on the phone to her mum as she waits to hear if she has been acknowledged by the Academy. The second shows her reaction: she looks ecstatic, her sheets dropping to reveal two avocado emojis that she's used to preserve her modesty. I mean, we'd be happy enough to drop our duvet, too.
She spoke to Good Morning America shortly after. 'I was in bed,' she explained. 'I FaceTimed my mom and she screamed for a long time, and I FaceTimed my dad and his phone died - these are the two that have been pumping me up and keeping me going and supporting all of my stuff since I was tiny, so they are so thrilled and they can't stop screaming. I'm very happy that they got to be the first people I spoke to. Everybody's rehearsed their childhood Oscars speech about 100 times, right? Before the age of 10.'
She will not be having avocados to celebrate, choosing the more traditional option. 'I think I'm going to have some champagne', she added.
The Oscars take place on February 9th, and Florence faces some stiff competition: Laura Dern, Kathy Bates, Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson are all nominated in the same category. Good luck Florence!
