It's no secret that we are obsessed with Fleabag. It may have only been on our screens for two, short series, but it changed the face of British comedy (and began our major Phoebe Waller-Bridge infatuation). So it comes as a bit of a surprise to discover that it was beaten to a Best Comedy prize by a rather unexpected winner.
Last night saw the annual National Television Awards take over the O2, with some amazing categories acknowledging a year of achievement in TV. The comedy battle was particularly impressive. As well as Fleabag, our second favourite comedy Derry Girls was in contention, as was Sex Education and After Life, the Ricky Gervais black comedy. But all three went home empty-handed. Thanks to Mrs Brown's Boys. Yeah, we know. Hundreds of irked viewers took to Twitter, with one tweet speaking for many: 'Derry Girls, Sex Education and Fleabag really lost to Mrs Brown’s Boys... British public further demonstrating why they don’t deserve rights.' The National Television Awards are voted for by the public.
While we can't quite believe it, Mrs Brown's Boys does make sense as the winner of a publicly-voted prize. It regularly tops the charts of TV ratings, and has a huge following across the country. That is despite accusations of racism and homophobia. 'Change the fucking channel', creator and star Brendan O'Carroll has said in response.
Something tells us that Phoebe will not have woken up in a rage this morning. The second series of her programme won Golden Globes, Emmys and BAFTAs, so she probably doesn't have room on her mantelpiece. But we're still a bit sore.
As well as Mrs Brown's Boys, Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson, BBC drama Peaky Blinders and Sir Michael Palin all walked away with trophies.
