The most deserved win at last night’s NTAs went to Jesy Nelson, who took home a factual award for her documentary Odd One Out. As she took to the stage, the singer admitted she was ‘overwhelmed’ at the win - which was voted for by the public - for her heartbreaking film which focused on the abuse she has endured since shooting to fame with Little Mix. Crying, she said, ‘I'm so sorry, this is so overwhelming. I'm such a baby! Thank you so much.'
Her boyfriend, Love Island star Chris Hughes, was cheering her on from the front row - and Jesy thanked him for boosting her self-esteem. ‘I want to thank Chris, my boyfriend for bringing me up every day and making me feel confident.' Jesy - who was wearing a gorgeous orange gown - continued: 'I want to thank every person that voted. You have no idea what this means to me, to us. I don't think we expected this reaction when we made it… I'm so grateful that such a negative experience in my life turned into such a positive one.'
The hour-long film shed light on Jesy's struggle, and subsequent suicide attempt, and became the top show on BBC iPlayer after its release, with 1.87 million requests within seven days.
‘All I cared about was what people were saying about me,’ Jesy told The Guardian before the show's release. ‘I felt that I physically couldn’t tolerate the pain any more. A lot of people think "stop moaning'", but until you’ve experienced it, it’s hard to understand – and it doesn’t just happen to people in the limelight. There’s so many people struggling with social media and online trolling. People need to know about the effects it has.’
