Just when you think that it would be impossible to find a headline more outlandish than those that have already (and entirely correctly) been written about President Donald Trump, another one comes and knocks you for six.
Actress Emma Thompson has revealed that back in the 1990s, she received an unsolicited and utterly unexpected phone call from Trump, inviting her to stay in the Trump Tower and go out for dinner with him. Yes, really.
Speaking on Swedish news programme SVT, the actress described how she was in the US working on the film Primary Colours, around the time of her divorce from first husband Kenneth Branagh. Sitting in her trailer, she heard the phone ring.
'I lift up the phone [and I hear] "Hi, it's Donald Trump here,"' she revealed. ' I say "'Really? Can I help you?," and he says "I wonder if I can offer you some accommodation in one of my Trump Towers, they're really comfortable?"'
Naturally, the actress was pretty bemused by this offer, given that she'd never even met the now-President. When she asked him why he'd called her, he answered with: 'Why you know, I think we would get on very well. Maybe we could have dinner some time?'
'I didn't know what to do with myself,' she told SVT, revealing that she ultimately responded to Trump's out-of-the-blue offer with a perfectly polite (and very British) response.
'I was on my own and just said "Um, OK, I'll get back to you. Thank you so much for the offer,"' she explained. Emma, needless to say, never took Trump up on his offer, though there is part of her that wishes she did. 'Think of the stories!' she joked - but think of actually having to sit down for a meal with Donald Trump...
