Emily Ratajkowski Reveals Why She Turned Down Her Husband’s First Proposal

The world was taken by surprise in February when Emily Ratajkowski announced her shock wedding to the world via Instagram story. The ceremony was quick, with little planning, and it sounds like the proposal was similarly unplanned considering her husband didn’t even have a ring.

Emily was on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night when she revealed all about the 24-hour-long engagement. She told Fallon, ‘he proposed to me at Minetta Tavern, and he didn't have a ring, so I was like, 'Hmmm, nah,"’

An adequate response since spur of the moment proposals would strike doubt in the minds of many people, however, in the most romantic of occasions and for the non-materialistic it may not be an issue. Seemingly, Emily became one of those people just moments later, when her husband decided to try once more to propose by fashioning a ring out of a paper clip.

She continued, ‘and then he took the paper clip that the bill was paid with and made me a ring, which I actually thought was really romantic. And then we made our actual rings.’

We just can’t fathom a situation where you’ve turned down a proposal and it’s not ridiculously awkward, never mind one where moments later your partner decides to TRY AGAIN with a ring made from a PAPER CLIP…

Maybe models’ lives are actually like the romantic comedies they appear in? Which, if so, Emily is living the dream.

She went on to talk about how the couple made their own wedding bands, which they bought in New York City’s Chinatown the night before their wedding. Since they had 24-hours to kill after the proposal before they could legally get married (it’s a City Hall rule, apparently), the couple decided on another untraditional option.

‘We walked into Chinatown and bought an ounce of gold, and he was like, “We’ll melt down the gold and make the rings”’, she told Fallon, ‘so I was like, “I just don’t see us melting down gold, like that just seems kind of difficult,” but then he ended up going to some store in Midtown and met this very nice Israeli man was like, ‘I know how to do that.’

Alas, he taught the couple how to create their own personal wedding bands, which is admittedly adorable. ‘So, we came into his studio after hours and then we actually hammered them out, the whole thing, used a little blow torch’ she continued, ‘and they were supposed to be temporary rings but now I’m very attached and I really don’t want to get rid of it. I just feel like making it yourself, like could you be more personal, really?’

While the proposal might have us thinking ‘really?’, the wedding band story is legitimately the cutest thing we’ve ever heard. After all, who wants a generic ring from a jeweler when you could have an adorable story to tell from it. You can watch the full interview below...
