Emily Atack has called out people for big-boob shaming on Twitter, posting about the double-standard she has experienced as she has got older in the public eye.

‘Can people stop saying to girls with big knockers “it’s a bit boobie?!” when trying on clothes,’ she tweeted. ‘Some people in TV make me feel like I’ve deliberately strapped on a rubber pair and said - look at these bad boys. You wanted them out when I was 19!’

Her tweet has been liked by over 7,000 Twitter users and received nearly 400 replies – with many women sharing support for her statement. ‘THANK YOU!’ one replied. ‘I get this when I buy something & if it's low cut it's just like I've got a sign on my head saying "come & give a comment!" ... I was at a charity ball & felt amazing in my dress, then felt like crap when someone said "your dress is a bit boobie" - like jog on!!!’

‘Can’t change my boobs, they are mahoosive, they are gonna end up on show time to time, why people feel the need to have an opinion on them beats me,’ another added.

However, naturally, many of the replies were men missing the point, with Emily calling out the creepy messages as 'shocking’. Her Twitter thread serves as a reminder that women are still objectified on a daily basis for things they have no control over. Our body parts are constantly sexualized – whether we want them to be or not – and too often considered a playground for others commentary.

And more than that, her statement outlines just how complicated the objectification of women’s bodies gets as we age. No longer are you just a thing for someone else to gaze and comment upon, but subject to even more negative commentary for yet another thing you have no control over.

In an ageist, sexist society – women are either told to put it on show or put it away, and that needs to stop. As Emily says, not only should she not have to hear unsolicited advice about her body or the clothes she wears, she also shouldn’t need to cover her boobs up just because she’s no longer a teenager.
