According to Eddie Redmayne, his latest role could be his best and most rewarding yet.
Seven weeks after welcoming his first daughter Iris with wife Hannah Bagshawe, the Oscar-winning actor has opened up about fatherhood, and – spoiler alert – has some pretty heart-warming stuff to share.
Speaking at the Omega House Olympics opening night party in Rio de Janeiro at the weekend, Eddie told Hello!, ‘it’s only seven weeks in, but it’s amazing. It’s wonderful. All of the stuff you’ve heard for years, it's all true but utterly extraordinary.’
The actor, who is a brand ambassador for the luxury watchmakers, is currently in Rio for the Olympics, and couldn’t be happier to take his daughter on her very first holiday.
‘We were given the opportunity of coming to Rio; I’ve never been to South America,’ he revealed. ‘’The notion of coming to Brazil and Rio was extraordinary. And the idea of bringing Iris on her first trip abroad to the Olympics in Brazil was too much of an extraordinary opportunity to turn down.’
So far Eddie and Hannah, who welcomed their first child on 15th June this year, have been spotted attending the men’s swimming and beach volleyball events, and the actor is looking forward to cheering on Team GB as the Games go on.
‘Jessica Ennis-Hill I think is formidable and a deeply inspiring human being,’ he said. ‘Tom Daley is a neighbour of mine. We live quite close to each other in London […] the kind of tenacity and drive I find mind-blowing. He’s a lovely guy.’
The actor, who’ll next be seen on the big screen as Newt Scamander in the much-anticipated Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, also revealed that he’s enjoying exploring the city with Hannah.
‘We went up to Christ the Redeemer and had a look over the city at night which was, for both my wife and I, unlike anything we’d ever seen,’ he said. ‘But actually all you need to do in Rio is just sit on Copacabana and let it all wash over you. In my case, apply a lot of sun cream!’
