Apparently Half Of Donald Trump’s Twitter Followers Are Fake

It has become apparent that Donald Trump may have been buying Twitter followers, the Metro reports.

In the past few days the President's twitter account, @realDonaldTrump has seen a sharp rise in followers - an extra 5 million to be precise. Naturally, this has led many people to question the authenticity of his new followers.

A quick look at some of his new following reveals that the majority of them are recently created accounts without photos, bios or tweets. This therefore suggests it is highly likely that they are fake.

According to Twitter Audit Report, an analysis tool which will tell you how many of an account's followers are real people, around 15 million of his 31 million followers are fake. Yep, that works out as roughly 50%.

And it is even more shocking when you compare the stats to last year. FiveThirtyEight reported that in April 2016 Trump had just 7.6 million Twitter followers and only 8% of them were fake.

While it is normal for a small amount of someone's following to be fake, Trump's current amount of fake followers definitely suggests something dodgy is going on.

So, why would the President be buying followers? We all know that fake followers do nothing for your reach or engagement but simply boost your numbers and make you appear more popular than you are. Maybe, as many news outlets have reported, he is chasing Obama's follower count of a whopping 89 million. We certainly wouldn't put it past him...
