After Blackpool Police released CCTV footage of the thief carrying a tray of beers, the story made headlines around the world thanks to his uncanny likeness to Ross from Friends.
In fact, the pair look so similar that David himself reassured the police that he wasn’t guilty of the crimes, tweeting in October last year, ‘Officers, I swear it wasn't me. As you can see, I was in New York. To the hardworking Blackpool Police, good luck with the investigation.’
But now the thief, Abdulah Husseini, has been jailed for a series of thefts and fraud offences.
Husseini was described at Burnley Crown Court as a ‘travelling, wandering, nomadic thief’ after using a stolen bank card to buy things at four shops in Blackpool last September.
The Guardian reports that he had walked into an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant and stole a wallet from a customer’s jacket while he was away from his table - after which, he made two successful purchases before carrying cans of beers to the till at Iceland.
Yesterday, Husseini was convicted by a jury after a two-day trial of one count of theft and four counts of fraud by false representation.
Judge Dodd told him he ‘may be released very soon’ on licence after he had in effect already served half his nine-month term awaiting the trial.
Husseini has been remanded in custody since he served an 18-week jail term imposed at Wimbledon magistrates court in January for handling stolen goods, theft and possession of a knife.
